In response to the recent High Court order requiring an inquiry into the disqualification of MLAs who switched parties, the Revanth government appears to be employing strategic political maneuvers. Hours after the court’s directive, the Speaker’s Office moved quickly to appoint Serilingampally MLA Arikepudi Gandhi, who recently switched allegiance from BRS to the Congress, as the Chairman of the Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

This appointment is significant because traditionally, the PAC chairmanship is granted to a member of the main opposition party, a convention that wasn’t followed here. The choice of Gandhi, as well as the appointment of other MLAs who also won on BRS tickets, signals the Speaker’s power to decide the status of party memberships under the legislature’s rules.
