Repeating Rajamouli: Not Safe For Neel

Prashanth Neel

Prashanth Neel is right up there next to Rajamouli in terms of commercial filmmaking in Indian cinema. He is the second most desired director for any elite league hero in India now, thanks to KGF and Salaar.

One interesting observation about Neel is that he is going the Rajamouli way when it comes to selecting his crew.

At the NTR-Neel launch event that was held last morning, we could see Neel’s staple cinematographer and music composer, Bhuvan Gowda and Ravi Basrur respectively. They are evidently onboard for this film as well, much like Salaar and KGF duology.

Rajamouli is the one whose set this trend by working with Keeravani and Senthil all through his career. Now, Neel appears to have taken a cue from the same.

The difference is that Rajamouli kept building different worlds and aesthetics for each of his films. So, he needed someone in full sync with him so he went with Keeravani and Senthil, and in accordance they used to deliver unique outputs.

But in the case of Neel, he is sticking to the period actioner genre again and again. On top of that, if he has the same camera chief and music director, things could get really monotonous.

The dark cinematography is being repeated here. Ravi’s music for Salaar is completely different from KGF 2, but it had very little impact in the theaters. Only after the OTT debut did it catch whatever traction. Theatrically, it was underwhelming.

While retaining the core crew might keep the director comfortable, churning out the desired output is the key here. This is where following Rajamouli might not be the right option for Neel. Working with new men might open new horizons for him. But hey, who better to assess this than Neel himself.
