Mandakini gained a lot of popularity after playing the female lead in late director Raj Kapoor’s Ram Teri Ganga Maili. She appeared in several other films like Dance Dance, Kahan Hai Kanoon and Pyaar Karke Dekho after that, but eventually stepped away from the film industry. However, she came as a guest on The Kapil Sharma Show with actor Sangeeta Bijlani in 2023.
In an interview with Pinkvilla earlier, Mandakini had opened up about her time in the limelight and how there was a pay disparity faced by actresses during that era. “When we used to work in the movies, they gave us Rs 1–1.5 lakhs for the full movie. That was the price. Maximum 2 lakhs, not more than that. Heroines wouldn’t get more than this. For example, if I liked a movie and agreed to do it, a few days later an announcement would be made—with another actress. I later learned it was because I asked for Rs 1.5 lakh and they found someone else willing to do it for Rs 75,000,” she shared.
Mandakini further added, “They just needed a heroine. ‘We have to shoot 2-3 songs. If one won’t do it, someone else will. Whoever comes for the cheapest, take her.’ That was the mindset of directors and producers.”
