Residents of Karukkakurichi, near Karambakkudi in Pudukkottai district, staged a road blockade on Saturday demanding justice for the death of a nursing student under suspicious circumstances.
A 20-year-old student from Raja Kudiyiruppu village in Karukkakurichi was a second-year nursing student at Pudukkottai Government Medical College. She was reported missing on December 25. Her body was found the next day in a well in the same village.
Following a complaint, the Vadakadu police registered a case of suspected suicide under Section 194 of BNSS. The body was sent for post-mortem examination to the Pudukkottai Government Medical College Hospital. However, the girl’s family alleged foul play and demanded that the case be reclassified as murder. They refused to receive the body until the police arrested the accused.
On Saturday, the girl’s family and relatives staged a protest near the medical college, blocking the Pudukkottai-Thanjavur highway. The protest disrupted traffic for a while before Ganesh Nagar and Vadakadu police officials intervened. They assured the protesters that action would be taken based on the post-mortem report, leading to the protest being called off.
Annamalai seeks action
Meanwhile, BJP State president K. Annamalai termed the death as “deeply shocking.” In a post on X social media platform, he alleged that the family suspected a man who is reportedly a relative of a DMK functionary in the area and claimed that pressure was being exerted on the police to prevent action against him.
Mr. Annamalai urged the police to act impartially and swiftly against those responsible, emphasising the importance of a transparent and fair investigation.
