Ghosi Bypoll Result 2023 LIVE: Fates Of Dara Singh Chauhan, Sudhakar Singh Hang In The Balance

The fates of turncoat BJP leader Dara Singh Chauhan and Samajwadi Party’s (SP) Sudhakar Singh will be decided today as the counting begins at 8 am. Polling was conducted at 455 booths in 239 polling stations on Tuesday and the voter turnout was just over 50%. This is a prestige battle for both BJP and the Opposition.

    Background

All eyes are on the Ghosi (Uttar Pradesh) bypoll results as it is being seen as the first direct contest between the “united” Opposition and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The results of the Ghosi byelection are being touted as sort of a precursor to the Lok Sabha election next year as it could reflect the sentiments on the ground in Uttar Pradesh, which contributes 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha, particularly in the Purvanchal region. Ghosi recorded a mere 50% voter turnout on Tuesday.

In this high-stakes electoral battle, the BJP fielded former minister Dara Singh Chauhan, the incumbent MLA who defected from the Samajwadi Party (SP) to join the saffron party just a few days ago. Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party (SP) pitted senior leader Sudhakar Singh against the BJP, hoping to rake in ‘Rajput’ votes, in addition to their core voter base of Yadavs and Muslims. Singh was backed by the Congress and even the AAP.

BSP, the third-largest party in Uttar Pradesh, did not take part in the bypoll.

While the BJP secured the backing of several caste-based groups such as the Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party, Nishad Party, and Apna Dal (Aunpriya), the SP, in addition to Congress and AAP’s backing, enjoyed support from the Left parties and Suheldev Swabhiman Party. With high-profile leaders like CM Yogi Adityanath and former CM Akhilesh Yadav campaigning for their respective candidates, this has become a high-stakes election and a prestige battle for both sides. Over a dozen UP ministers also actively campaigned for BJP’s Dara Singh Chauhan in Ghosi.

For the BJP, a win would reinforce the saffron party’s assertion that the I.N.D.I.A bloc poses no significant challenge to it. On the other hand, a win for the Opposition would boost the I.N.D.I.A leaders’ confidence in the group and give Akhilesh Yadav more space at the table. The SP currently has three members each in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
