Cinema and politics have a deep-rooted connection in South India, particularly in Tamil Nadu, where film stars have successfully transitioned into powerful political leaders. M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), a superstar in Tamil cinema, famously parted ways with the DMK after differences with Karunanidhi and went on to form the ADMK (later AIADMK).
MGR’s legacy was carried forward by his protégé, Jayalalithaa, who also became Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, with the DMK as their consistent political rival. Other film personalities, such as K. Bhagyaraj, Sarath Kumar, and Vijayakanth, have also ventured into politics but did not achieve the same level of success.

Vijayakanth’s DMDK, however, managed to make a mark, particularly when aligned with the AIADMK. Kamal Haasan, despite his popularity in cinema, struggled to gain traction with his political party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM).
Now, the spotlight is on actor Vijay, popularly known as “Thalapathy,” who is gearing up for the 2026 general elections with his political party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). Vijay’s entry into politics comes at a time when the political landscape in Tamil Nadu is undergoing significant changes.

Several factors might work in Vijay’s favor:
Lack of Strong Opposition: With the AIADMK weakened after Jayalalithaa’s demise, DMK under MK Stalin has faced little resistance. Vijay’s TVK could emerge as a strong counterforce to Stalin’s leadership.

Internal Discontent in AIADMK: Dissatisfaction within the AIADMK might lead some leaders to join Vijay’s TVK, bolstering his political base ahead of the 2026 elections.
Youth Appeal: Vijay has a massive following among the youth, especially those aged 18 to 35. This demographic, which Kamal Haasan failed to capture in the 2021 elections, might shift towards TVK, given Vijay’s popularity and relative youth.
Vijay, being a Scheduled Caste (SC) candidate with an apparent anti-BJP stance, could also attract voters disillusioned with the current political scenario, particularly those looking for an alternative to the DMK. His entry into politics could shake up Tamil Nadu’s political dynamics, potentially offering a new direction for the state’s future. He entered into politics in right time.
