Portugal vs. South Korea live: World Cup score, highlights, result from 2022 Group H match

Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo have the luxury of knowing that they are already secure in the last 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but there is still plenty to play for when they face South Korea today.

They may already be assured of safe passage from Group H with a game to spare, after beating both Ghana and Uruguay, but the battle for top spot is still on — and a potential easier route through the knockouts.

They could rotate some of their star names for this final showdown, and there is debate as to whether Ronaldo will be involved, but the risk is that in defeat they could still be dethroned, and face a much trickier job against potentially Brazil in the Round of 16.

South Korea have even more to play for, knowing that only a win will see them have any hope of progressing, and even then goal difference could come into play as Uruguay take on Ghana in the other match.

Portugal vs. South Korea live updates, highlights from 2022 World Cup

2 hrs from kickoff: Portugal on their morning stroll. A reminder: they will win the group unless they lose and Ghana win while overturning a three-goal inferiority in goal difference.

2 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: Bento has done the requisite talking up of South Korea’s prospects of pulling off the shock they need today in order to have a chance of progressing.

“I’ve worked for a long time with the players,” he said. “We have competent staff and I am confident they will do what is needed. All the staff are in line with our work and, actually, many decisions are taken during the matches by them. The players are also in line with the technical staff. I trust them and don’t think it will be a problem.”

3 hrs from kickoff: Pepe remembers South Korea head coach Paulo Bento from his spell as Portugal manager between 2010 and 2014.

“I know what he asks for,” said the defender, who expects South Korea to be very organised and have “a lot of quality”. “He’s a coach who prizes the collective.”

3 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: Spot-on Portugal can make history if they add to Cristiano Ronaldo’s spot kick against Ghana and Bruno Fernandes following suit against Uruguay.

No team has ever scored a penalty in each of their three group stage matches in the World Cup.

4 hrs from kickoff: Portugal could make it four wins in a row today. They’ve also kept clean sheets in three of their last five matches.

4 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: Cho Gue-sung scored twice for South Korea against Ghana last time out, accounting for two of his six total international goals.

Portugal vs. South Korea lineups, team news

Portugal boss Fernando Santos has hinted that he could leave Cristiano Ronaldo out of his team to face South Korea.

With a place in the knockout stages already assured and Ronaldo having sat out a training session ahead of the game, he may join a number of stars in missing out on a place in a rotated selection on Friday.

“Let’s see. In principle, Ronaldo will train soon,” Santos said.

“Cristiano Ronaldo was replaced in both games. There’s a plan in case Cristiano can’t play. There is no player guaranteed to play all the time. It would hardly run if we didn’t have a plan.”

    Portugal projected starting 11

    (4-1-2-1-2, right to left): 22. Costa (GK) — 2. Dalot, 24. Antonio Silva, 4. Dias, 5. Guerreiro — 18. Neves — 6. Joao Palinha, 14. Carvalho — 10. Bernardo Silva — 9. Andre Silva, 11. Joao Felix

    • Injured: Nuno Mendes, Otavio, Danilo Pereira
    • Suspended: None

Santos will be forced into at least one change, with Nuno Mendes likely out of the remainder of the tournament and Raphael Guerreiro his expected replacement.

If several changes are made as expected, the likes of Diogo DalotAndre Silva and Joao Palinha should benefit.

    South Korea projected starting 11

    (4-2-3-1, right to left): 1. S. Kim (GK) — 15. M.H. Kwon, 19. Y. Kim, 4. M. Kim, 3. J. Kim — 5. Jung, 6. Hwang — 22. Kwon, 25. Jeong, 7. Son  — 9. Cho

    • Injured: None
    • Suspended: Bento

After receiving a red card against Ghana last time out, coach Paulo Bento won’t be on the sidelines for this one. However, he has an injury-free squad to pick from and so could stick with a similar line-up.
