You would imagine an elected MP in the UK would live a lavish life or at least maintain basic cleanliness at his properties. But Jas Athwal put his name in the mud when he came into controversy for the miserable living conditions of the rental properties he owns.
A Labour Party MP, Athwal, owns 15 rental flats, which is the highest in the House of Commons. However, he doesn’t have much to boast about as these properties were infested with black mold and ant infestations, as reported by BBC. The Indian-Origin MP has obviously passed the blame to the agency that maintains the flats but promised due maintenance and repair.

The tenants have even claimed they feared eviction if they spoke out on the matter. Ironically, Athwal, in 2018 had emphatically claimed, “Rogue Landlords, we are coming for you,” which has now come to haunt him. The Conservative Party missed no chance to jump in and accused Athwal of exploiting his tenants.
The mold in his home has not only festered his home but also the reputation of the Indian community that he represents at such a large scale. Moreover, the question is how can a man of his stature be so reckless as to put his flat on rent in such appalling conditions. Will there be any actions against him by the Labour Party that promised to give better living conditions for private renters? It remains to be seen.
