Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother, Hiraba (100), was admitted to the super-specialty UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology & Research Centre in Ahmedabad on Wednesday morning due to health issues, and her condition is stable, hospital authorities said.
The Prime Minister reached Ahmedabad in the afternoon and met her. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and the hospital’s honorary director, Dr R K Patel, accompanied Modi.
In a statement, the hospital said, “The Prime Minister’s mother is admitted to U N Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre, Ahmedabad, and her condition is stable.”
A spokesperson of the hospital told The Indian Express that the Prime Minister’s mother is “recovering”.
Top sources in the Gujarat government and the BJP said Hiraba’s condition is “improving”. Sources said Modi sat by his mother’s side, holding her hand and left the hospital only after seeing improvement in her condition.
Hiraba lives with her youngest son Pankaj, a retired Gujarat government official, at Raysan in Gandhinagar district.
Among several state ministers and BJP MPs and top leaders who went to the hospital include Health Minister Rushikesh Patel, Women and Child Development Minister Bhanuben Babariya, and MPs Parbatbhai Patel and Jugalji Thakor. While leaving the hospital, Rajya Sabha MP Thakor told the media, “Hiraba’s condition is stable. She is likely to be discharged in a day or two.”
He said the Prime Minister sat with his mother and “looked niraash (dejected)”, but added, “Hiraba’s condition is fine. There is nothing to worry about.”
Lok Sabha MP from Banaskantha, Parbatbhai Patel, also said Hiraba is stable. On the symptoms and her ailments, Parbatbhai said such conditions develop with age but “her health is fine”. He said, “Hiraba is not in ICU and is under constant supervision of the doctors. She is likely to be discharged within a day or two.”
Leaders of various parties wished speedy recovery Hiraba. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted (translated from Hindi), “The love between a mother and a son is eternal and priceless. Modi ji, my love and support is with you in this difficult time. I hope your mother gets well soon.”
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also tweeted, wishing Hiraba a speedy recovery.
Former Congress leader and former Gujarat CM Shankersinh Vaghela tweeted, “I pray to God for early recovery and long life of respected Hiraba.”
The Vishv Umiya Foundation in Ahmedabad, which has members from Kadva Patidar community, organised a special evening aarti at Umiya Temple in its Jaspur campus on the city’s outskirts, praying for the speedy recovery of Hiraba.
