Prime Minister Narendra Modi has left for Ahmedabad after his mother died early this morning. She was 99. PM Modi, who was scheduled to launch the developmental projects in West Bengal, may join the events through video conferencing, sources told NDTV.
“Smt Hiraba Modi passed away on 30/12/2022, at 3:39 am (early morning, during the treatment at UN Mehta Heart Hospital,” the hospital where she had been admitted since Wednesday said in a statement.
Informing about her death, the Prime Minister posted a heartfelt tweet early this morning, “A glorious century rests at the feet of God… In Maa, I have always felt that trinity, which contains the journey of an ascetic, the symbol of a selfless Karmayogi and a life committed to values.”
Heeraben Modi lived with PM Modi’s younger brother Pankaj Modi at Raysan village near Gandhinagar.
The Prime Minister would regularly visit Raysan and spend time with his mother during most of his Gujarat visits.

Rajnath Singh highlighted the value of a mother in one’s life and said that its void is “impossible to fill”. “I am deeply pained by the passing away of Hira Ba, mother of Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi. The death of a mother leaves such a void in one’s life that is impossible to fill. I express my condolences to the Prime Minister and his entire family in this hour of grief. Om Shanti!” the Defence Minister tweeted.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also condoled the death of the Prime Minister’s mother passed away at 100, and said that she was the epitome of simplicity and high values of life.
In June this year, PM Modi wrote a blog for his mother on her 99th birthday. In the blog, the prime minister wrote about various aspects of his mother’s life which “shaped his mind, personality and self-confidence.”
