Christmas 2022: “What is Christmas? It is the tenderness of the past, courage for the present, and hope for the future,” – Agnes M. Pharo.

Christmas is celebrated on 25th December across the globe. One of the most sacred days in Christianity, the day commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ and is celebrated all over the world. Families from far and wide gather to share meals, make merry, and present gifts, decorate their homes, bring a Christmas tree and decorate it, and sing carols, to celebrate Christmas.

History and Significance

Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem to his parents, Joseph and Mary. It is believed that Christ was conceived through the Holy Spirit and was born when Mother Mary was still engaged to Joseph.  

Various countries around the world have different names for festivals. It is referred to as Yuletide in Germany, Navidad in Spanish, Natale in Italian.

Christmas has been celebrated as a secular family holiday since the early 20th century, by both Christians and non-Christians alike. A significant part of this celebration is a Santa Claus, a mythical figure who brings joy across the globe and is eagerly awaited by children.

Christmas rituals

There are many rituals associated with Christmas. From bringing Christmas tree and decorating it to attending midnight mass at the Church on Christmas eve. 

Children also leave warm milk and cookies for Santa at night in the hope of receiving gifts from him. It is believed that Santa Claus lives in the North Pole with his many helper elves. It is said that on Christmas Eve, Santa Claus rides on his sleigh from the North Pole to give gifts to children.
