Google has unveiled its Pixel 9 series, introducing a host of upgrades with an all-new design language, advanced artificial intelligence capabilities, and upgraded camera configurations. The Pixel 9 series includes four models—Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold—marking a departure from the two-model lineup the US-based technology giant has traditionally offered. Notably, all four models will be available in India, beginning with the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL, which will be available for pre-order from August 14, with sales starting on August 22. The Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro Fold will be released at later dates. Here is everything you need to know about the Pixel 9 series:
Pixel 9 series: What is common
The Pixel 9 series is powered by the Tensor G4 processor, which introduces new artificial intelligence capabilities by leveraging the Gemini Nano multimodal model for reasoning across text, audio, and visuals. As Google devices, the entire lineup supports the Gemini assistant out-of-the-box, providing enhanced functionality with access to Google apps.
While the Pixel 9 series retains all the mobile AI features introduced with the Pixel 8 series, new tools have been added to further enhance the user experience. These include an improved Magic Editor with auto-reframe support, which suggests the best crop and expands the image, as well as a new reimagine feature that allows users to tap on a part of the image they wish to change and input a prompt to modify it.
Among the new additions is the “Pixel Screenshot” feature, which allows the Pixel to remember everything so that users do not have to. This feature enables information searches using audio or text, with results curated from the device’s screenshots. Google has stated that this Pixel-exclusive AI feature processes all information on-device.
Another new feature is “Add Me,” which will be released in preview with the Pixel 9 series. Similar to last year’s models, the Pixel 9 series will receive software and security support from Google for seven years.
While the Pixel 9 series models share many similarities, they also have distinct differences that cater to varying user preferences. The Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL are nearly identical, with differences primarily in display size and battery capacity. To highlight the key differences, let us compare the Pixel 9 with the Pixel 9 Pro:
