India’s biggest multiplex chain, PVR Inox, introduced the ‘PVR Passport’ program, which is a monthly pass that allows users to watch 4 films for free in a month. The pass cost varies from region to region.

In AP and Telangana, a PVR Passport costs Rs. 350 per month. That means a user can watch four films every month by just paying 350 rupees.

Initially, this initiative was lauded by cinephiles, who often find it tough to pay 200-300 rupees to watch a single film. They used this passport to watch movies in theatres at a nominal price. It also helped PVR quite a bit in increasing its footfall.

However, PVR’s recent critical move in the passport program is drawing criticism from the audience.

Recently, PVR decided to put a blackout period on a few films from this program. The films included the likes of Stree 2, Deadpool and Wolverine, Vedaa, and Double iSmart.

This blackout period means the Passport will not be applicable to certain films during the first week of release.

The blackout period is now extended to big upcoming releases like GOAT, Devara, Joker: Folie A Deux, Kanguva, Vettaiyan, Venom: The Last Dance, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, Singham Again, Pushpa: The Rule, Game Changer, Mufasa, Baby John, and Sitare Zameen Par.

Generally, audiences prefer watching these big and anticipated films in theatres. Everyone wants to watch these films on the first weekend and not after the first week.

If the Passport does not apply to these films in the first week, they feel cheated by PVR. The only reason many viewers take the Passport is to avoid paying heavy prices for big films.

Now, by putting a blackout period, PVR has made the Passport program a disappointing initiative. People have opined that it may further decrease the Passport user base rather than increase it.
