Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal slammed former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi over his speech in the Rajya Sabha on the Delhi services bill and questioned whether the BJP had begun a full-fledged dismantling of the Constitution. During the discussion on the bill, the former CJI had said, "The doctrine of the basic structure of the Constitution has a very debatable jurisprudential basis." He made the remark while answering if the Delhi services bill violates the basic structure of the Constitution.
Slamming Gogoi over his remark, Venugopal said, "Shocking that a former CJI questions the jurisprudence of the basic structure of the Constitution. Is this the BJP's trick to begin the full-fledged dismantling of the Constitution of India? Does it think that democracy, equality, secularism, federalism, judicial independence are all 'debatable' ideas?"
Venugopal demanded that the central government "categorically oppose" Gogoi's statement or "it will be clear that the BJP has now started a process to destroy the core tenets of our Constitution".
