Paris 2024 Olympics LIVE: Emily Campbell looks to claim second Olympic medal after Kate French WITHDRAWS from modern pentathlon final due to illness

The first event of the modern pentathlon is down and it’s been a mixed start for Kerenza Bryson.

She scored 286 out of 300 in the showjumping which has her down in 13th.

Plenty to do, particularly after eight athletes took maximum points.

A tough battle, but Andrews cruised to victory by 0.096 secs there.

Finucane couldn’t quite bring it back as she tried to come around on the outside and back in, with Andrews in control for most of the race.

It’s the best of three remember, but Finucane has much to do.

We’ve got another medal hope in Emma Finucane, who takes on Ellesse Andrews in her semi-finals of the sprint.

Finucane won gold in the women’s team sprint, while she also added a bronze in the women’s keirin.

This promises to be a bruising and tough encounter though, with Andrews the keiran Olympic champion.

The first semi-final has just seen a photo finish with Hetty Van de Wouw edging past Lea Friedrich in the first race of their duel in what is a best of three.

The pack is so tight together, it’s impressive when the riders manage to make up ground and edge past each other.

Unfortunately Neah Evans is so far back it’s going to be tough for her to get towards the front.

OH NO! And she’s fallen! Disaster. Evans has been knocked off her bike during the sprint finish as she tried to overtake but locked wheels with another rider.

What a disastrous start to the competition. She’s on her feet which is good news, and is now cycling over the line, but she just couldn’t quite find her way through.

An eventful opening to the omnium and that looked painful for Evans. Let’s hope she’s OK to continue.

Jennifer Valente of the USA took the race there.

Despite being 30 laps, it’s a quick race.

We’re already more than 10 laps down and France’s Valentine Fortin has stolen a march on everyone else.

Neah Evans is in the middle of the riders, which is tightly packed.

It is a proper tactical battle out there and during the time I’ve typed this post, we’re five more laps down!

If you’ve not heard of the omnium, don’t worry as we’ve got you covered.

It’s a sort of cycling equivalent of the pentathlon or heptathlon, where the medals are decided by performances across a variety of events.

In the omnium there is a scratch race, tempo race, elimination race and points race, with it promising to be a major test of endurance for all the riders.

Each cyclist’s accumulated points total decides the medals.

A reminder that Neah Evans – who took silver in the madison final alongside Elinor Barker – represents GB and to start with, we have the scratch race which is a 30-lap race.

It’s a packed morning of track cycling coming up.

Team GB have got Jack Carlin and Hamish Turnbull in the men’s keirin, while Emma Finucane goes in the women’s sprint.

We’ve also got Neah Evans, who will be competing in the women’s omnium scratch race, and it promises to be a fantastic day of action.

A major blow for Team GB and Kate French, who was the reigning Olympic champion from Tokyo, after she pulled out of the modern pentathlon final.

Kerenza Bryson remains in the final, and she has a chance of a medal today as GB chase two more to surpass their Tokyo haul.

As we mentioned, Team GB need just two medals to beat their haul from Tokyo in what has seemingly been a games of close misses for Britain.

We’ve got Emma Finucane and Jack Carlin among the GB cyclists in action on the track, while Tokyo silver medallist Emily Campbell, who became the first British woman to win a weightlifting medal, hoping to repeat her feat.

She ran the 5000m at the beginning of the week and took bronze, then she also took bronze in the 10,000m and now she’s back in the marathon and breaks away to win gold to make history.

What a week of endurance from the Netherlands superstar as she racks up yet another medal for the Dutch.

Assefa takes silver and Obiri takes bronze. What a race!

This is such a shame for Team GB and Kate French, but she is out of the modern pentathlon final due to illness.

French was third in the ranking round, just behind leader Elodie Clouvel of France.

Her Team GB team-mate Kerenza Bryson – who is the European champion – remains in medal contention though so let’s hope she can bring some glory for Team GB.

I feel tired just watching these girls running and they are absolutely flying down the final few kilometres.

The front five is currently as follows: Lokedi, Shankule, Assefa, Obiri and Hassan, with Suzuki about 100m further back and probably too far away to cause a problem for this group.

You suspect one of these athletes at the front is going to make a dart for it imminently, but they all seem to be waiting for the others.

We’re just heading into the final stages of the women’s maratthon with under 5km to go.

It is shaping up to be a fantastic finish, with Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa and Amane Beriso Shankule joined by Kenyan duo Sharon Lokedi and Peres Jepchirchir at the front.

Sifan Hassan and devline Relin Meringor are just behind them.

There are still many gold medals on offer, but the real question is whether Team GB can beat their total medal count from Tokyo.

They need just two more to do just that!
