    Outrage Over BJP Minister Remarks!

    Nirmala Sitharaman

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has been receiving a lot of backlash after her seemingly “insensitive” comments on the death of CA Anna Sebastian Perayil. Addressing the issue of the tragic death, Sitharaman suggested that stress management could be successfully achieved through spirituality, inner strength, and by incorporating “divinity” into our curricula.

This statement has made the public furious and has led to widespread accusations from the public and the opposition alike. Many opposition members have slammed the minister, accusing her of “victim-shaming”, and promoting insensitivity towards a very delicate issue of overexploitation and overburdening of corporate employees in the country.

The leaders have further stated that there is a need to address the widespread problems of “inhuman working conditions” in the corporate ecosystem of India, rather than giving the youth useless advice to practice spirituality and incorporate divinity into their lives, which only makes their struggle look small and insignificant.

While the Finance Minister has come out to say that she was not talking about a specific incident, but just intended to highlight the importance of spirituality in people’s lives, the bigger face remains that India’s youth continue to remain exposed to a highly toxic work culture that continuously overburdens them, and starves them of the work-life balance.

It should be the responsibility of the company to take care of its employees, as ultimately it is the employees who play the key role of uplifting a company to greater heights with their hard work and dedication. Instead what we see is often tragically just the opposite of what is right.
