Olympics Breakfast Briefing with SIR STEVE REDGRAVE: Tommy Fleetwood is just one shot off the lead, Lizzie Deignan is set to make history – and Louie Hinchcliffe looks to spring a major shock in men’s 100m

Reports of Team GB‘s rowing demise were greatly exaggerated, while there were medals aplenty for the squad across the board on day eight in Paris.

After failing to win a single rowing gold medal at the Toyo Olympics, the British team emphatically bounced back and earned a record tally at an overseas Games. The men’s and women’s eight earned gold and bronze respectively to see Team GB finish with three rowing golds, two silvers and three bronzes.

Elsewhere, Team GB added an additional four medals to the overall tally to take their haul up to 33 at the halfway point of the Games.

Following the excitement of day eight, Sir Steve Redgrave looked ahead to the drama that awaits on the ninth day, with potential medal opportunities in golf, dressage, swimming, cycling and even in the 100m.

Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood is only one shot off the leader Jon Rahm going into the final round, which gets underway on Sunday morning.

In the pool, Britain’s men’s 4x100m medley relay team are looking to go one better than they did in Tokyo. In Cycling, Lizzie Deignan is set to become the first female cyclist to compete in four Olympic Games.

She goes in the road race which will take place at around 1pm on Sunday afternoon.

Becky Moody, Charlotte Fry and Carl Hester go in the dressage final, which gets underway at 9am, after they won bronze in the team final on Saturday.

The athletics schedule swings into full gear with a host of British favourites staking their claim on day nine. Keely Hodgkinson is looking to ease into the 800m final alongside Jemma Reekie and 17-year-old Phoebe Gill.

Team captain Josh Kerr contests the men’s 1500m semi-final, while Matt Hudson-Smith makes his bow in the 400m.

Fans will need to make sure not to miss the men’s 100m semi-final and final at the Stade de France later in the evening. The event is a highlight of any Games but there is an unexpected British hopeful looking to make history.

Youngster Louie Hinchliffe put in a stunning run to beat the favourite Noah Lyles in his heat on Saturday and has now emerged as an outside contender for a medal – if he can navigate the semi-final.

Zharnel Hughes will also be hoping to be on the start line for the final which is set to get underway just before 9pm.

Mail Sport and The National Lottery have teamed up to bring you exclusive video content from our greatest Olympian Sir Steve Redgrave each day during the Olympic Games in Paris.

Sir Steve won five Gold medals in an illustrious career and is considered by many to be our greatest Olympic hero. Back in 1996 at the Atlanta Olympics, Team GB only won one gold medal – and Steve alongside Matthew Pinsent delivered it for the nation.

This was in an era before National Lottery funding was introduced which has transformed the fortunes of our British athletes. Thanks to National Lottery players, Team GB is now a superpower on the world stage winning 22 Golds and 64 medals at the last Olympics in Tokyo.
