The Supreme Court recently settled a divorce case where the wife demanded an outrageous sum of ₹500 crore from her US-based husband. Highlighting the increasing misuse of section 498A, the bench didn’t find any reason behind the wife’s demands.
The couple met online, got married in July 2021, and lived together for 3 to 4 months before getting separated. It was the second marriage for both of them and the wife used the man’s first divorce settlement against her in extracting more money from him.

She equated her six-month marriage to her husband’s 19-year wedlock with two children for which the NRI businessman gave ₹500 crore to her first wife. It was an outrageous claim, especially since she already had assets worth over ₹1 crore.
The Supreme Court made it clear that alimony is for support, not a tool to grab wealth and ruled that the husband should only pay ₹12 crore as permanent alimony. It canceled all criminal cases against the husband and granted a divorce on grounds of cruelty.

The court also issued a strong warning about misusing the laws as a weapon for harassment. Such misuse not only wastes the court’s time but also harms genuine victims who rely on these protections.
