Insulin resistance, as we know, is a major factor in the development of type 2 diabetes. It occurs when the body’s cells become less responsive to the effects of insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. As a result, the pancreas produces more insulin to compensate, leading to higher insulin levels in the blood. Over time, the body’s ability to maintain normal blood sugar levels becomes impaired, resulting in the development of diabetes. However, did you know that not just diabetes, insulin resistance lies at the foundation of several other health problems too?
In an Instagram post, Bhakti Kapoor, a nutritionist, explained that changes in glucose and lipid metabolism caused by insulin resistance lead to illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension. “Insulin resistance syndrome is the name given to this group of medical problems (also known as metabolic syndrome),” she said.

Apart from diabetes, other issues that may be linked to insulin resistance include fatty liver and hormonal imbalances, which can further lead to acne, hirsutism, PCOS, and infertility.
Agreeing, Dr Aniket Mule, Consultant, Internal Medicine, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road said that insulin resistance is not only seen due to diabetes but other conditions, too. It is a known fact that obesity, cardiovascular disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, metabolic syndrome, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are some of the worrisome conditions that can put one at a greater risk of insulin resistance.
“Moreover, not getting the required amount of physical activity is linked to insulin resistance and prediabetes. According to various studies, insulin resistance can invite a host of other serious health problems such as heart attacks, and strokes that are life-threatening and lead to higher morbidity and mortality rates,” the expert said.
While insulin resistance cannot really be reversed, Kapoor mentioned that it can be addressed with an appropriate mix of long-term dietary and lifestyle changes.
Dr Mule suggested the following measures to manage insulin resistance:
*Take the medication prescribed by your doctor. Do not exceed the dosage without consulting the doctor.
*Exercise daily without fail for at least 45 minutes.
*Sleep well and remain stress-free.
*Avoid overexertion.
*Maintain an optimum weight and eat a nutritious diet.
