The team are emerging from the tunnel at St. James’, so we’re not far from kick-off.

An intriguing match awaits, with the big question being how City cope without Rodri. It’s worth noting that they coped absolutely fine without the Spaniard in their opening three league matches, though.

Joe Cole says that he thinks City may have been given an extra spark after that injury and last week’s tense encounter with Arsenal – we’ll soon see if he’s correct.

As well as boasting that impressive no-loss streak against Newcastle, City have scored in each of their last 31 Premier League games against the Magpies. This is the longest scoring streak one team has against another in the competition’s history.

In their Premier League history, City have won more games (31), more away games (12) and scored more goals (101) against Newcastle than they have against any other opponent.

Overall, City are unbeaten in their last 28 league games (winning 23 and drawing 5). 24 of these games have been in 2024 – the longest run without a Premier League defeat from the start of a calendar year since Chelsea in 2008 (26).

The Premier League title rivals played out an absorbing 2-2 draw on Sunday that ended with heated exchanges after John Stones snatched a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser for the hosts at the Etihad Stadium.

These two sides have met a whopping 192 times, with the first meeting dating as far back as October 1893. City have won 78 games between the two, with Newcastle winning 73 and 41 ending as draws.

The two teams met four times last season, with Newcastle winning 1-0 in the League Cup before City got their cup revenge with a 2-0 win in the FA Cup.

In the league, City won both games, with a 1-0 victory at home early in the season followed up with a thrilling 3-2 win at St. James’ Park in January of this year.

Although Mikel Arteta attempted to quieten a lot of the noise around Sunday’s febrile Manchester City vs Arsenal match by Tuesday, some of his staff were still privately ranting about it. It was no different up north. Modern footballers are by now diligently trained to ensure their media comments bring no controversy, but that’s precisely why it was so striking that Bernardo Silva felt the license to just let loose following that 2-2 draw.

“Liverpool always faced us face to face to try and win the game,” the Portuguese said, having already pointedly mentioned how Jurgen Klopp’s side had actually won the Champions League and Premier League. Unlike this Arsenal. Through that very specific reference, Bernardo signalled how this new Premier League rivalry has also gone to a level beyond City-Liverpool. Or perhaps deeper.

There’s a rare rancour to it now very much firing the dressing rooms, in a way that arguably hasn’t been seen since Arsenal’s own great duopoly with Manchester United. City-Liverpool never quite got down to the players or managers in the same way, although there was genuine “hatred” between the clubs.

Manchester City appear to have suffered a major blow with Rodri set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury against Arsenal.

The midfielder was substituted in the first half of the clash of Premier League rivals at the Etihad Stadium, with the club confirming that he has suffered ligament damage.

While the Manchester City manager often rotates elsewhere, Rodri is firmly established as a vital figure at the base of midfield and rarely misses the club’s biggest games.

But an expensively-assembled squad does provide Guardiola with a number of alternative options as he looks to replace the Spaniard, including Mateo Kovacic, Ilkay Gundogan and perhaps even John Stones at times.

Rodri has been ruled out for the remainder of the season by Pep Guardiola after the Manchester City confirmed the Spanish midfielder has successfully undergone surgery.

Rodri suffered ACL and meniscus damage to his knee in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal.

“He had surgery this morning,” Guardiola said. “ACL and some meniscus. So, next season he will be here. This season is over [for him].”
