    New Rules & Price Hikes

    Disney Follows Netflix

In July last year, Netflix launched its anti-password sharing initiative in India, targeting members who shared their accounts outside their households.

Now, Disney+Hotstar is following suit. CEO Bob Iger announced that Disney will begin cracking down on password sharing starting this September to boost its subscriber numbers.

Bob Iger revealed this plan during an earnings call, stating that the crackdown will be implemented “in earnest.” Disney had hinted at similar measures earlier in the year, notifying users about paid sharing options starting in February.

Although these plans were introduced in some countries in June, Disney has yet to confirm their rollout in the United States or provide details on the cost of these plans. The company aims to expand these options to more regions soon.

For comparison, Netflix charges around Rs 670 for additional members on a shared subscription. Bob Iger mentioned that Disney has received no negative feedback regarding its paid sharing notifications and ongoing efforts.

Additionally, Disney plans to raise subscription prices for Disney Plus, ESPN Plus, and Hulu starting in October. Bob Iger is confident that the price hike will be justified by new features, such as ABC News Live and curated playlists.
