A sudden rule change for H1B dropbox appointments has left many visa applicants in a difficult position. At the Pune VFS center on February 13, 2025, applicants were turned away due to a newly implemented 12-month visa expiry rule.
The rule took effect overnight on February 12(IST). Previously, those whose visas had expired within 48 months were eligible for dropbox submission. Now, only applicants whose viasas expired within the last 12 months qualify, forcing many to reconsider their travel plans.

One applicant who had an appointment that day discovered at the counter that their documents would not be accepted. The VFS staff confirmed the change and suggested waiting for the system to update, which might allow for rescheduling. If a rescheduling option becomes available, no new fees will be required.
However, if it doesn’t, applicants may need to start the process over, including paying the visa fee again. The official US visa scheduling website also showed no available appointments after the rule was implemented.

The lack of prior notice has led to confusion and stress, particularly for those who had already made travel arrangements. Many applicants depend on dropbox appointments to avoid in-person interviews, but with this new rule, they are uncertain whether they need to book an in-person appointment or if new dropboxx slots will open up.
The process now requires answering an updated questionnaire to determine if the applicant qualifies for dropbox submission or needs to schedule both an OFC (biometrics) and a consular interview.

Those still in the U.S. and planning to renew their visas are advised to postpone travel until more information is available. If they have a dropbox appointment scheduled under the previous rule, canceling or rescheduling might be the safest choice. The uncertainty surrounding appointment availability and the potential requirement for a consular interview could significantly affect work and family obligations.
