New Delhi: A new variant of the Coronavirus, known as XEC, is spreading rapidly across the world, according to reports.

The XEC strain is said to be a hybrid of the KS. 1.1 and KP.3.3 variants. It was initially detected in Germany in June but has since been found in 15 countries spanning three continents.

Quoting experts in the United States, the Mirror said that the Covid XEC will become the dominant variant.

“XEC is just getting started now around the world,” Eric Topol, director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute in California, told the Mirror.

Covid XEC Symptoms

The symptoms of the XEC variant are similar to those of other Covid-19 variants and common illnesses like colds and flu. The National Health Service (NHS) lists the main symptoms as:

– High temperature or shivering (chills)
– New, continuous cough
– Loss or change to the sense of smell or taste
– Shortness of breath
– Feeling tired or exhausted
– Aching body
– Headache
– Sore throat
– Blocked or runny nose
– Loss of appetite
– Diarrhoea
– Feeling sick or being sick

Covid XEC Precautions

  • Get vaccinated if you haven’t already.
  • Take a booster dose to stay up to date.
  • Wear face masks, especially in crowded areas.
  • Avoid large gatherings where possible.
  • Maintain physical distance from others.
  • Practice good hygiene, such as regular handwashing.
  • Isolate yourself if you exhibit any of the above symptoms to prevent further spread of the virus.

Since April, new Omicron variant subtypes have been observed spreading throughout the US. Known as FLiRT subvariants, the CDC estimates that they currently represent about 80% of infections in the nation. Except for results from at-home tests, the CDC reported that 17% of all COVID tests were positive in the week ending August 24.
