Netflix Includes Additional Disclaimer For IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack

Netflix has landed itself in trouble ever since IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack premiered last month. While a portion of the public praised the show for its brilliant performances and storyline, there was a section that started slamming the series for a mistake, knowingly or unknowingly, committed by the makers.

As soon as the show was released, netizens pointed out that producers did not reveal the real names of the terrorists who were involved in the hijack. The major criticism was towards the code names of the hijackers, which included Bhola and Shankar and was considered to be an insult to the Hindus, as stated by some people.

The debate is ongoing and might not end so soon. Well, if we have to talk about facts, the code names Bhola and Shankar were used by the terrorists in reality when the incident happened. Although a few people have questioned why the code names could not be changed, it is impossible since it would be wrong to alter something that has been recorded by different publications.

Meanwhile, to avoid any further issues, Netflix has now added a new disclaimer in the beginning after their logo appears on the screen. The show previously began with a statement saying that it is inspired by real-life events alongside being adapted from the book, Flight Into Fear, written by Captain Devi Sharan and Srinjoy Chowdhury.

While the above-mentioned disclaimer has not been removed, the new one claims that it is a fictional show set in the background of real-life incidents. The disclaimer also says that the makers have taken cinematic liberty to portray the events on screen.

The second half of the disclaimer mentions the code names used by the terrorists followed by a list of their real identities. While this is expected to end the ongoing controversy, it is hard to satisfy everyone with the same.

If we have to analyze the entire controversy in detail, we conclude that it shouldn’t have happened at all. The reason for the same is the lack of research. Everything needs to be checked before proceeding. This should also be done when we hear that any project is inspired by an incident that happened in reality.

Moreover, the victims of the IC 814 hijack have also opened up on the controversy, with most of them claiming that the events shown in the series have been portrayed with 100% accuracy. The same people have also confirmed that the code names featured in the show were not wrong and were used by the terrorists.

The intention of the producers was not just to entertain. They even aimed to bring the pain and agony of the victims on screen, which was successful.

Unfortunately, we are witnessing unnecessary controversies being created out of minor things. It does not seem like the mistake happened intentionally from the side of the producers. It was possibly the pressure of releasing the show due to which the additional disclaimer was left out.

In case anyone is not satisfied with the same, he or she can refer to the articles related to the IC 814 hijack that have been published over the years and check the interviews of the victims for further validation.
