NEW DELHI: The Madras high court on Sunday denied permission for the burial of murdered BSP chief K Armstrong at the BSP office in Chennai. The court was hearing a plea filed by K Porkodi, wife of the late Tamil Nadu BSP chief.
The court had asked Armstrong’s wife to consider burying his body at an ‘alternative location’ than the party office in Chennai. The bench noted that the site proposed by the petitioner was a passage.
Instead, the Madras high court permitted the burial of Armstrong on a one acre private land in Pothur village, Villivakkam, Tiruvallur.
The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government opposed the plea, citing that the area in question is designated as residential.
47-year-old K Armstrong was assassinated on July 5 by a gang of six people. Eight arrests have been made in the case so far.
BSP chief Mayawati paid her respects to the dead leader and urged that the case should be handed over to CBI.
“I urge the state government and especially the CM that he should ensure law and order in the state, weaker sections in particular should feel safe. Had the government been serious, the accused would have been arrested, but now since that’s not the case, we urge the state government to refer the case to the CBI,” she said.
