Melbourne Storm CEO Justin Rodski has confirmed the club plans to buy the NRL grand final and eventually host the year’s biggest game at the MCG.

While the bold move would infuriate many footy fans in Sydney, it could become a reality given in March the NRL and NSW Government announced the grand final would be played in Sydney this season-  but only signed a one-year deal.

ARLC chairman Peter V’landys also previously stated he would be open to shifting the grand final interstate, similar to NFL’s Super Bowl, which sees different venues in the US annually.

‘We were hoping to have an exclusive [long term] arrangement with the NSW government,’ V’landys said in 2022.

‘Unfortunately, that is not the case. It opens the door for a Super Bowl-type concept or whoever can give us the best deal for the game.

‘It could go anywhere….it [Grand Final] is a major event and you’ve got to remember we do have four teams in Queensland.’

In 2021, Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane hosted the grand final between the Panthers and Rabbitohs due to Covid restrictions in the Harbour City, breaking a 114-year tradition stretching back to 1908.

And now Rodski wants to see the game’s biggest came of the NRL calendar year staged in Melbourne.

‘It would be the biggest NRL grand final crowd ever and if the Storm were playing in it would obviously be very special,’ he told Code Sports via News Corp.

‘I wouldn’t rule it out in the future.’

It comes after Craig Bellamy’s all-conquering Storm secured yet another minor premiership this NRL campaign – and on Saturday afternoon host the Sharks in a qualifying final at AAMI Park.

The winner moves straight through to the NRL preliminary final.

‘It [Sharks game] will end up being a sell-out by the time we kick off,’ Rodski said.

If the Storm manage to win this weekend, a mouth-watering proposition awaits for sporting fans in Melbourne – a home NRL preliminary final on Friday, September 27.

Less than 24 hours later on the Saturday is AFL Grand Final day at the MCG.

Rodski added what could potentially unfold ‘would be huge…..but we’ve still got to get there.’

Penrith claimed the minor premiership last season before going onto win the Grand Final in spectacular fashion against Brisbane – and Melbourne are slight favourites in 2024, according to many online bookmakers.
