The death of four people have been confirmed by Spain’s National Police, so far. Earlier, the X account of Spain’s emergency helpline 112 posted that two were confirmed dead. The recent update from the National Police now takes the death toll to four and the number of injuries to at least 21.
Marga Prohens, president of the Balearic Islands, said she was ‘shocked by the incident’ and expressed condolences to the families of the four dead victims.
“Shocked by the information that reaches me about the collapse of Playa de Palma,” Prohens said. “I would like to express all my love and warmth to the families of the four people who have lost their lives in this tragic incident and wish the recovery of all those injured. Thank you to all the emergency services that have gone to the scene and are still working.”
According to local media reports, police have closed down the beachside road where the building was located. However, tourists and locals have flocked the spot, and a large crowd has gathered.
An X account called The Informant posted videos and photos from the site which showed that rescue operations are underway at the site of the collapse. We could not verify the authenticity of the videos.
The local mayor, Jaime MartÃnez, and deputy mayor, Javier Bonet, have arrived at the scene to coordinate rescue efforts and support the affected families, according to the TSC website. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.
