Measures against mosquito breeding, public awareness: Karnataka health department’s advisory amid dengue surge | Bangalore News

Amid a rise in dengue cases in Karnataka, the state health department Wednesday issued an advisory for the people, which includes issues like solid waste disposal, mosquito breeding and public awareness.

Civic bodies and health officials have been asked to ensure prompt disposal of solid waste and prevent its accumulation at landfills as they are breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Karnataka health commissioner Randeep D in the advisory directed civic bodies and health officials across the state to take measures against breeding of mosquitoes. He directed officials to create awareness among the public on how dengue is spread and the steps which can be taken to keep themselves safe. Further, the advisory recommended the involvement of NGOs and resident welfare associations for the implementation of measures against the spread of dengue.

“Currently, due to frequent rains and lack of water supply in most of the districts of the state, an increase in dengue cases has been observed. The role of community / public is important in the success of the preventive measures taken by the health department to control dengue fever. Dengue is caused by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. The symptoms appear within 5-7 days after the mosquito bite,” advisory said.

Presently, 9,147 cases of dengue have been reported from across the state, according to the state health department.

Sudden high fever, severe abdominal pain, severe headache, joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and red patches in mouth, nose and gums are the symptoms of dengue.

“If not treated on time, symptoms may worsen and death may occur due to Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) and Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS). Therefore, when symptoms of dengue fever appear, immediately go to the nearest government hospital and get proper treatment,” the advisory said.
