Matildas star Sam Kerr has announced on Instagram that she and long-time partner Kristie Mewis are expecting a baby in 2025.
The pair took to Instagram to confirm the news, posting a heartwarming set of pictures of themselves in a photo booth while holding up a picture of Mewis’ scans.
The footballing duo were all smiles and shared a kiss as they celebrated the exciting news with their Instagram followers.
They captioned the post: ‘Mewis-Kerr baby coming 2025!’
The Australian striker was also seen in one of the pictures pointing to Mewis’ tummy with a huge smile on her face.
The comments section of their Instagram post was flooded with congratulations messages from social media users and sporting stars around the world.
Kerr’s Matildas team-mate and Manchester City star Mary Fowler was one of the first to comment, writing: ‘Congratulations’ adding a ‘heart-eyes’ emoji.
The Matildas official account followed in suit, writing ‘Congratulations’ with a ‘love-heart’ emoji. Several other women’s football stars commented on the post, including Fran Kirby, who wrote: ‘Omg. Congratulations to both of you.’
Chelsea Women’s Instagram account also sent their congratulations, while Australia defender Caitlin Cooper wrote: ‘AMAZING. Best news ever!!!!’
Mewis, 33, and Kerr, 31, have been together since 2021 and got engaged last year following weeks of speculation.
Kerr had been spotted on social media wearing a golden ring on her wedding finger in September 2023, with Mewis, who plays for West Ham and the United States national team, going on to reveal the news that the pair were engaged in November.
Speaking on her partner, Mewis told People Magazine: ‘She’s [Kerr] is my biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain, all of my crazy antics.’
It is understood that the couple had met while they were both competing for clubs in the National Women’s Soccer League in the USA back in 2019.
The pair had spoken online for nearly four months during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, with the pair also understood to have spent two weeks in lockdown together.
In 2021, America would take on Australia at the Tokyo Olympics and the pair made headlines as they went head-to-head during the semi-finals of the women’s football tournament.
The pair were seen having an on-field embrace following the match and would cross paths again on the international stage later that November, again sharing a hug after the match following a 1-1 draw between Australia and the US.
‘We’re not private people. I like sharing my story. I like sharing who I am outside of football’ Kerr told UK publication Gaffer earlier this year.
‘Football is five per cent of my life’ she added.
The pair would celebrate their engagement at the beginning of this year, with Kerr heading back to Perth from London to catch up with family and friends at The Raffles Hotel.
They posed for a few snaps next to a huge cake and while celebrating with a few drinks in the Perth sun.
