Going to the U.S. for a Master’s degree is almost like every engineering student’s only ambition these days in India, and the large volume of students going to the U.S. for Master’s programs justifies this fact.
However, it is an open secret that only a small section of these students go to the U.S. for actual studies; the majority view the student visa as a gateway to enter the U.S. This is why many MS students are struggling, as obtaining an H-1B visa is extremely difficult, and finding a first job is a nightmare amid intense competition.

While the media focus is on Master’s students, there is a silent wave of students heading to the U.S. for undergraduate studies.
Sending children to the U.S. for a four-year bachelor’s degree is quite expensive, and it is not easy for parents to send a student who has just completed grade 12 all the way to the U.S. at such a young age, unless they have a strong motivation to excel in their studies.

However, the wave is real, though it is limited to families who can truly afford it. In contrast, a Master’s degree is a two-year program, and parents are less worried as their child is older and more independent. Also, getting loans for a master’s is relatively easier compared to getting a loan for a four-year U.S. bachelor’s degree in India.
The biggest difference between Bachelor’s and Master’s students coming to the U.S. is that those pursuing Bachelor’s degrees are genuinely coming for their studies, while the majority of Master’s students use the student visa as a means to enter the country and later rely on odd jobs until they secure an H-1B job.
