Massive Drop in Foreign Tourists

Goa has been India’s famous beach destination for a long time, providing a constant source of revenue from the tourism sector. But recent trends indicate a sharp drop in foreign tourists, creating worries about its standing in global travel spots.

According to sources, while domestic tourism has remained stagnant at 8 Million visitors since 2019, foreign tourism has seen an unbelievable decline from 8.5 Million in 2019 to 1.5 Million in 2023.

Various sources have claimed that former loyalists from Russia and the UK are also shifting to destinations like Sri Lanks, citing Goa’s rising prices along with massive tourist exploitation.

Social media users have been giving various reasons for Goa’s massive decline. Many have cited that overcharging for average experiences in Goa has become highly unsustainable.

Many South Asian Nations have relaxed their visa norms to attract tourists, and due to much cheaper rates and better infrastructure, foreign tourists prefer those places instead of Goa.

Many people have warned that if Goa does not respond to this ‘wake-up call’, it might soon lose its remaining charm. If word-of-mouth spreads, domestic tourists may also decide to skip the place in favour of other spots.

One social media user correctly pens it by saying, “Except for temple tourism, Indian spots will face a reality check if issues like high pricing aren’t resolved,”

Goa needs to revitalize its tourism sector and provide better infrastructure and facilities at more affordable rates to garner the attention of tourists and compete with places like Vietnam, Thailand, and Bali.
