Subramanyam (Rao Ramesh) vows to his wife and family that he will get a government job only. Until he gets it he wouldn’t take up anything else. It results in Subramanyam staying jobless for years and depending on his wife for day-to-day needs.

What happens when one day Subramanyam’s account is credited with an unexpected huge sum? Whose money is that and what does Subramanyam do with it is the movie’s basic plot.

Performances

Rao Ramesh credited with the moniker ‘The Entertainer’ is truly the entertainer as claimed. He carries the entire movie on his shoulders with impeccable timing. Nothing is unusual here, we have seen him do all these before and he does them all over again without missing a beat or looking jaded.

Ankith Koyya continues his form from the recently released Aay. He plays Rao Ramesh’s son and together they bring the house down in many a scene. The movie is all about delivering the punches correctly and Ankith has done a fairly good job of it.

Ramya Papsupuleti playing the heroine is an apt choice for the character. It is a mix of immatureness and innocence and both the shades are brought out effectively by her. She is also mostly used for comic purposes where the characterisation itself helps big time.

Analysis

Lakshman Karya directs the movie. He additionally provides the story, screenplay and dialogues. Well, he has picked a simple story for Maruthi Nagar Subramanyam but worked hard on the other departments which are the essential requirements for stories like these.

The opening involving the introduction of the protagonist’s world itself shows what is most likely to be in store ahead. The various fun bits are over the top and look like trying a little too hard. However, things settle down as the narrative progresses.

The gags are the mainstay of the proceedings. They are packed throughout from the start to the end with some intermittent ‘dramatic’ breaks in between. The good thing is those ‘gags’ work mostly. And since they are coming non-stop, the entertainment feels the same way.

However, as is with many new attempts, sometimes one loses sight or the longer picture and gets carried away in fun. So, while the fun works, it does feel like being overdone and increasing the length. We feel that in the first half by the time interval arrives. Still, this is a minor quibble as the entertainment overrides it.

The second half continues the same momentum as the first half. But, the expected happens as the gag’s impact starts thinning a little bit. How long can one sustain with only the comic punches is the question that comes into the mind.

Again, the director succeeds in keeping a small suspense element running through the proceeding. It gives the breathing space, and the small underlying emotion also helps the cause.

In the end, the drama doesn’t take up too much space and lets the fun continue. The neatly wrapped-up climax also covers up the lag that one might have felt during the events leading to the pre-climax. It is mainly the repetitiveness after a point and gags slowly starting to become thin. A positive feeling is felt at the end and that is all that matters.

Overall, Maruthi Nagar Subramanyam is thin on the storyline, but a narrative filled with gags nonstop more than makes up for it and covers other flaws as well. If you plan on watching an entertainer with the silliness not being an issue, try it.

ankith-koyya-maruthi-nagar-subramanyam-movie-reviewPerformances by Others Actors

The movie hardly has many artists playing big roles. We have Rao Ramesh and Ankith Koyya doing the major weightlifting. Apart from them, Indraja plays a significant part as Subramanyam’s wife. She looks in form and does well in what’s given. A dance bit at the end is a surprise considering her age.

Harshavardhan is another supporting cast that’s well done. He does well as is expected from him. Ajay is adequate and the rest appearing in brief parts are alright.

Music and Other Departments?

Kalyan Nayak’s music is okay at best. The songs don’t stand out in particular, and add to the length. The background score is better comparatively. It is a serviceable effort that helps maintain the energetic level of the comedy. The cinematography gives a short film vibe at times. The low budget of the film shows visually. The writing is superb considering the movie’s requirement of ‘non-stop-entertainment’.
