A Serbian police officer was injured by an unidentified attacker who shot a bolt with a crossbow at him while he was on duty at the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade on Saturday, according to the Serbian interior ministry. The attacker was later shot dead by the officer in retaliation.

"The officer than used a weapon in self-defense to shoot the attacker, who died as a result of his injuries," said interior minister Ivica Dacic.

Meanwhile, the policeman was rushed to the Belgrade's primary emergency hospital, where surgeons will operate to extract the bolt from his neck.

"All the circumstances of the attack and possible motives are being investigated," added Dacic. Law enforcement agencies are still working to identity the attacker.
