Mahindra Thar 4×2 in a quick drive review video

We already know that Mahindra is currently working on a 2WD version of Mahindra Thar for the market. It will be more affordable when compared to the 4×4 variant that we have in the market. It looks like Mahindra has started the production of the 2WD version and it has started reaching many dealerships across India. We have been seeing several pictures and walkaround videos of Mahindra Thar 4×2 on the internet. Here we have a new video where a vlogger drives the upcoming Mahindra Thar 4×2 diesel.

The video has been uploaded by The Car Show on their YouTube channel. In this video, vlogger shows the exterior of the upcoming Mahindra Thar 4×2. He also talks about things that are different in the SUV when compared to the regular 4×4 version. The SUV seen here in the video is the hard top variant. Mahindra is still offering the same design to the SUV as before. The halogen headlamps, fog lamps integrated on the bumper and LED DRLs on the fenders are all the same. It even gets the same 18 inch alloy wheels as the 4×4 version. Coming to the differences, teh SUV does not get the mHawk branding on the fenders and it also misses out on the 4×4 moniker on the rear fender.

Other than this, the SUV looks just the same. The vlogger then gets into the cabin of the Thar 4×2 to take it for a spin. Even the cabin design is the same in this version. The only missing thing in this SUV is the lever to engage 4×4. The space where the lever was earlier located has been converted into a storage space. When compared to the 4×4 version, the 2WD or RWD version of Mahindra Thar is available with a smaller diesel engine. It uses a 1.5 litre, turbocharged diesel engine instead of 2.2 litre mHawk. This engine generates 116 Ps and 300 Nm of peak torque. This is the same engine that is also offered in the XUV300. The diesel 4×2 version does not get an automatic transmission.

Once he explained the differences, he took the car out for a small drive. On paper the 1.5 litre diesel engine is less powerful than the 4×4 version however, vlogger mentions that he did not feel much difference. The engine felt quite responsive and he only felt a small lag in power under 1500 RPMs. He drove the car around the city and was very happy with the performance. He mentions that the Thar did not disappoint him in the drive and not many people would actually be able to figure out whether this is the 4×4 or 4×2 version. The engine had enough grunt even during low speeds and it could manage to pick speed even in third gear. The weight of the 4×2 Thar is much less than the 4×4 version. The size of the engine is also smaller which means, it will offer better fuel efficiency. As it gets a smaller engine the tax on this SUV will also be less as it comes under sub-4 meter SUV category. Vlogger mentions that he expects Mahindra to start the Thar 4×2 at around Rs 10.9 lakh, ex-showroom.
