Why the TDP and JD(U) push case for Speaker’s post as insurance

The TDP and JD(U), two parties key to the third successive stint of the NDA at the Centre, have decided to press for the post of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Sources said the two parties have already indicated to the BJP leadership that the Speaker’s post should be offered to alliance partners – TDP’s GMC Balayogi was Speaker when Atal Bihari Vajpaye was heading a coalition government in the late 1990s.

    Decoding the Verdict

How will the third Narendra Modi government differ from the two previous ones that came to power in 2014 and 2019? The answer will lie in the composition of the Eighteenth Lok Sabha. Read More to understand what the verdict means.

What was the refrain behind the verdict

The BJP leadership will now have to rule at the head of a coalition government, take along its allies, be more mindful of its own party leaders who were given short shrift. The BJP may still dismiss concerns raised by the Opposition but it will be aware that it can’t quite get away with it – with a 60-plus dip in their tally.

In democratic politics, arithmetic also shapes chemistry and Prime Minister Narendra Modi knows that. Ever since he began contesting elections in 2001, he has never been part of a formation that’s not in majority — until now. This did have an echo on the campaign street. Read Neerja Chowdhury’s analysis of the verdict.
