Arne Slot is refusing to get carried away by the outstanding start to Liverpool’s Premier League campaign as he has stressed the difficulties of winning a league title.
Liverpool are sitting top of the tree on Christmas Day with Slot’s side four points clear of second-placed Chelsea with a game in hand.
However, Slot is keen to keep his players and Liverpool fans grounded by insisting you cannot judge a league table until the halfway stage.
Slot, speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, said of Liverpool’s title charge: ‘I have always said how difficult it was. You can see it now. The best way to judge the league table is after 19 games.
‘It is so hard to win a league everywhere around the world. It is so hard to win the league. You have to do so many things well. That is why so many teams and not many players are able to do so because it so difficult.
‘I hope I can continue to be so happy with the work I do. That was at Feyenoord — as I was there in 2024 — and Liverpool.’
Arne Slot is calling for caution when it comes to talk of Liverpool winning the league title
Liverpool are flying high in the Premier League but Slot has said it’s still early days
The Dutchman is used to spending the festive period on holiday with family but will this year have to get accustomed to the busy Christmas football calendar.
He adds: ‘It is different. Yesterday there was a padel tournament that my brother organised and I knew from last season I was there and then went to Dubai for 10 days the day after.
‘No I am here I am not going to go to Dubai as I am going to manage a few Premier League games.’
When asked if it’s difficult being away from family, Slot replies: ‘Yeah. If I said no it would probably be strange as well. There are obvious reasons why we (my wife and I) kept the children and my wife in Holland as they are in the last year of their school.
‘They have to do their exams so for us it was not the ideal moment to bring them towards England. But in the ideal world you are the manager of Liverpool and still have your family around you.’
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are all out of contract this summer
Slot is hoping to follow in Jurgen Klopp’s footsteps by winning the Premier League title
Slot’s wish for 2025 is to win a trophy and he hopes Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold can help him achieve the feat.
The key trio can speak to clubs outside the Premier League from January 1 as they are all out of contract in the summer and Slot once again refused to be drawn into speculation.
‘I would say what a special accomplishment for these three that they have already done it (win the Premier League) in the past. I hope they will do this one more time.
‘Yeah (a trophy would be nice) that’s why we are in this job as well. But to win it there is a long process and therefore you have to do many, many things right and you have to enjoy that process as well. That’s what I have done for the past year and hopefully I will do in the upcoming year as well.’
