Medic rape-murder victim: Calcutta HC seeks CBI report on nasty social media posts
The Calcutta High Court today asked the CBI to file a report by September 18 on detestable posts being made on social media regarding the rape-murder victim of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. The court noted that nasty comments, which are far from being acceptable to any member of the society, have been made with the photograph of the victim as found in the copies of the offending posts provided by the petitioner.
VAT on petrol raised by 61 paise a litre in Punjab
The Punjab Cabinet today gave the approval to hike value-added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel by 61 paise a litre and 92 paise per litre, respectively.
A decision in this regard was taken by the council of ministers in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann here.

Central team begins visit of flood-hit districts in Andhra; restoration work apace in Vijayawada
An inter-ministerial team from the Central government on Thursday began its visit of the flood-affected districts in Andhra Pradesh. The team headed by Sanjeev Kumar Jindal visited Vijayawada, the worst affected place, to estimate the losses and destruction, said an official press release. The Central team visited the State Emergency Operations Centre in the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) office in Tadepalli, where officials explained about the torrential rains and floods.

Rain continued to lash parts of Rajasthan with the local weather office predicting that monsoon will remain active in eastern part of the state this week. According to the Meteorological Centre, Jaipur, heavy rainfall was recorded in Bundi, Jaipur, Bharatpur, Tonk, Jodhpur, Sawai Madhopur, Karauli, Bhilwara and Barmer districts, in the last 24 hours till 8.30 am on Thursday. In eastern Rajasthan Nainwa in Bundi district logged the highest rainfall of 141.0 mm and in western Rajasthan Jodhpur recorded the highest rainfall of 90.6 mm, the centre said.
