Lewandowski’s penalty style criticised by Maignan after Barcelona striker scores for Poland against France

Robert Lewandowski’s penalty style has been criticised by France goalkeeper Mike Maignan after Tuesday’s 1-1 draw between the two sides at Euro 2024.

Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring for Les Bleus, but Lewandowski hit back from the spot to salvage a point for Poland and deny France top spot in the group.

Yet Lewandowski’s penalty had to be retaken after Maignan saved the first effort but was then penalised by the referee for being off his line.

The Barcelona striker went on to score the retake, after his traditional stuttered run-up, but the kick did not go down well with the stopper.

He shared a social media post after the game that read “while the striker makes his 87th stutter in the run-up” and added some frustrated emojis to make it clear how he was feeling.

Poland coach Michel Probierz was also asked about the penalty after the game but isn’t bothered about Lewandowski’s style.

“I won’t tell Robert how to score penalties when he has scored almost 600 goals in his career,” he told reporters. “I don’t care how he scores them. The most important thing is that he scored.”
