Among the many interesting bits we know about the human body is the fact that it produces acid to aid the digestion process. But have you come across anyone telling you that this “acid is so strong that it can melt metals”? Well, so have we. Hence, to find out the truth behind it, as part of our latest edition of the Know Your Body series, we spoke to experts who decoded everything about the acid produced by the human body, including its function, what happens if it is produced in excess, and whether it can actually melt certain metals. So, let’s dive right in!

What is the acid produced by the human body?

The acid present in our stomach is Hydrochloric Acid (HCL), which is an essential acid for digestion. “It is secreted by the oxyntic cells of the stomach,” Dr N Ravisankar Reddy, Senior Consultant Medical Gastroenterologist, Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad told indianexpress.com. He added that it is a very strong acid with a “PH 1.5- 2.0. It can digest every food that we eat and can cause burns on contact with skin”.

But can this acid also melt metals?

No. Despite prevalent claims, this is not the case. Dr Reddy said that HCL in the stomach cannot melt metals but “can cause rusting”. Giving examples from his own practice, he shared, “Any foreign body consumed will stay in the stomach longer. We have removed a coin after 52 days also”.

Dr Vinay Dhir, Chairman-Institute of Digestive and Liver Care, SL Raheja Hospital, Mahim concurred and shared, “Our stomach produces hydrochloric acid, and surprisingly it does not damage our stomach. This is because the concentration of hydrochloric acid is less, and it’s a weak acid. It does not dissolve metals in these concentrations”.

What is the function of the acid in our stomach?

The acid in the stomach protects us from unwanted organisms that we might eat or drink. It also breaks down the food we eat and prepares it for further digestion process. “Stomach acid breaks down food and makes it more easy for digestion and also kills bacteria,” said Dr Reddy.

What happens if excess acid is produced in the stomach?

Stomach acid is essential for digestion, but excess acid production can cause problems. “Increased amounts of acid can be secreted in some rare conditions. Certain stomach infections may also increase acid secretions,” said Dr Dhir.

Dr Reddy added, “Excess acid production causes upper abdominal burning, reflux symptoms, and can cause ulcers”.

Tips to prevent acidity

Below are tips shared by Dr Reddy to prevent acidity. They are:

A. Take timely meals
B. Exercise regularly
C. Maintain proper sleep hygiene
D. Manage stress in work and life
E. Can take antacids when getting acidity

“Simple modifications in our diet can reduce symptoms of acidity. If we are overweight or obese, the protective mechanism fails, and we have frequent acidity. Physical activity and weight loss helps control these problems. If these problems continue for a long time or are very frequent, you should consult a gastroenterologist,” Dr Dhir concluded.
