Kerala remains on high alert with the India Meterological Department (IMD) warning that the northern and central districts are likely to receive very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on Monday (December 2, 2024).

In a 10 a.m. weather update, the IMD put northern districts Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod on red alert for extremely heavy rainfall (above 20 cm in a 24-hour period).

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in a Facebook post, urged the people in these districts to remain alert, as short-duration, high-intensity rainfall could trigger flash floods and waterlogging in low-lying regions.

The Malappuram district administration has issued orders banning quarrying activities in the district in view of the red alert.

Orange alert in 4 districts

Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur and Palakkad are on orange alert for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall (11-20 cm in 24-hour period).

Alappuzha and Kottayam are on yellow alert for isolated heavy rainfall. Nor heavy rainfall alert have been issued for Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.

Holiday for educational institutions in 5 districts

A holiday has been declared for educational institutions in Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kottayam, Kannur and Wayanad.

The Chief Minister has advised the people in the landslip-prone high ranges that are receiving heavy rainfall to be prepared to move out to safer locations during the daytime itself. People living in the coastal belt also have been advised to remain alert given the possibility of rough seas.

Control rooms

Control rooms are operational round-the-clock in all districts at the taluk and district levels. The people have also been advised to call the toll-free numbers 1077 and 1070 for assistance.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture out to sea till Wednesday as squally weather is expected to prevail along the Kerala coast.

According to the IMD update, heavy rainfall is likely to continue in some central and northern Kerala districts till at least December 4 (Wednesday).
