Kerala’s Congress legislator Uma Thomas, who had sustained severe injuries to the head and lungs after she fell from a gallery at Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium at Kaloor, Kochi, Kerala, on December 29, was taken off ventilator support on Saturday (January 4, 2025.)

The ventilator support was shifted around 11 a.m, according to a medical bulletin issued by the Renai Medicity Hospital in Kochi. Her lung condition is satisfactory despite pulmonary contusion. Her vitals and count remain stable, it said.

She will continue in the intensive medical care unit as she has not recovered from her critical condition. She spoke to her sons and doctors on Saturday morning, according to the bulletin.

Ms. Thomas, who represents the Thrikkakara Assembly constituency in Ernakulam district, had sustained serious head and spine injuries after she fell from a height of approximately 15 feet from a VIP gallery at stadium. She reportedly hit her head on the concrete ground below.

She was at the stadium to attend a mass dance event aimed at making it to the Guinness Book for the largest number of dancers (approximately 12,000 people) performing Bharatanatyam simultaneously. A probe carried out by the police had revealed safety lapses at the venue, including the lack of proper barricading on the temporary stage set up above the gallery.
