Kept screaming, no one heard me: Woman stabbed by man she had relationship with

A 21-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times by a man after she decided to end her relationship with him, in northwest Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar Monday.

The victim is undergoing treatment and her condition is stable, police said. She recently completed her graduation from Delhi University’s School of Open Learning, while the accused, 22-year-old Sukhwinder Singh, worked with a private firm. Singh, who lives in Gopal Nagar, was arrested from Ambala Tuesday after he absconded from Delhi.

According to the FIR, the woman stated that at 12:05 pm on Monday, she was going to her driving school in Adarsh Nagar when the accused intercepted her near Majlis Park Main Road and took her towards a narrow bylane.

“He asked me why I ended my relationship with him… I had ended my ties with him due to personal reasons. Following this, Sukhwinder pulled out a knife and stabbed me multiple times… I kept screaming but he kept assaulting me… nobody heard my screams,” she stated in the FIR.

After she fell to the ground, Sukhwinder allegedly fled the spot. DCP (Northwest) Usha Rangnani said the woman received around four stab injuries.

“I kept screaming for help… later, some neighbours came to my rescue and took me to the main road, from where I was taken to a clinic. The clinic referred me to the BRJM Hospital. I sustained stab injuries on my neck, head, and hands,” the FIR quotes her as saying.

DCP (Northwest) Usha Rangnani said a case under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder) was lodged following the incident. A police officer said both the accused and the victim lived close by and have been in a relationship for several years. “Both of them studied together till class 10 and have been together ever since,” the officer said. The officer said the victim was planning to pursue her masters in Australia and was about to move abroad. “The woman had ended her relationship due to this, which infuriated Sukhwinder,” the officer added.

CCTV footage of the incident purportedly shows the accused taking the victim to a narrow alley and stabbing her multiple times. “Technical surveillance was done and we arrested the accused while he was coming back to Delhi from Ambala, where he had fled. The condition of the victim is stable,” the DCP said.

The woman’s uncle told The Indian Express that they knew both of them were good friends, but could never imagine Sukhwinder would take such a step. “She is out of danger but still has deep cuts on her hand and neck. She never told anything to her parents about the accused harassing her, else we would have lodged a complaint,” he said.
