Declined courtship advances, a 23-year-old man on Wednesday barged into a 21-year-old woman’s house in Karnataka’s Hubballi city and stabbed her to death days after warning her of Neha Hiremath’s fate.
Police said the accused, Vishwa Sawant, also known as Girish, entered victim Anjali Ambigera’s house at 5.30 am and attacked her as she slept.
Before she could react, Vishwa had already attacked her with a knife. Despite efforts by the family to stop the Vishwa, he killed Anjali and managed to flee.
Vishwa committed the crime in the presence of Anjali’s grandmother and two sisters. He dragged her all over the house while kicking and stabbing her. Later, the killer pushed her into the kitchen where he stabbed her again.
The incident occurred in the Veerapura Oni area within the jurisdiction of the Bendigeri police station.
The incident shocked the state, occurring after the brutal murder of MCA student Neha Hiremath by a jilted lover on a college campus in the same city.
Vishwa escaped from the scene and is currently at large. The family informed the police that he had threatened to kill her like Neha Hiremath if she did not reciprocate his feelings.
The accused had been blackmailing Anjali, pressuring her to accompany him to Mysuru without informing her parents. A preliminary investigation by the police revealed that the accused has a history of involvement in theft cases. He allegedly stole bikes.
Anjali’s grandmother, Gangamma, had previously approached the police, informing them about the threats from the accused. However, the police did not take the complaint seriously and advised her not to be overly concerned, before sending her away. The police have launched a manhunt for the accused.
A case of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the accused and teams have been formed to arrest him, police said.
Neha Hiremath case
The daughter of Karnataka Congress leader Niranjan Hiremath was stabbed to death with a knife on her campus by a former student after she allegedly rejected his advances.
The victim, Neha Hiremath, was a first-year Master of Computer Applications (MCA) student at KLE Technological University in Hubballi, Karnataka.
According to police, the victim had known her attacker, Fayaz, who also attended the same college but later dropped out.
Fayaz fled from the scene after committing the crime and was subsequently arrested by the police.
“The accused had fled, but we arrested him in under 90 minutes. Other students have told us that Neha and the accused knew each other and had studied together. We will know more once the accused’s interrogation is done,” Hubballi Dharwad Police Commissioner Renuka Sukumar said.
