Karnataka government formation Live Updates: Amid hectic parleys over the CM race between Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar, Congress’ central observers for Karnataka arrived at Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence Monday evening. Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah arrived in Delhi this afternoon to meet the AICC leaders and DK Shivakumar will also be reaching later this evening. The swearing-in is scheduled for May 18 (Thursday), according to a Congress spokesperson.

Three central observers deputed by the Congress returned to Delhi on Monday after speaking individually to the newly elected MLAs. They will hand over the report on the views expressed by the majority of the MLAs to party president Mallikarjun Kharge later in the day. Siddaramaiah left for Delhi, while on the other hand, Shivakumar says he has not received a call to come to Delhi.

On Sunday, the newly elected MLAs decided to empower Kharge to take a call on who will become the next CM, during the CLP meet. This was done amidst a slogan war between supporters of Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah outside the venue of the meeting, each section wanting their leader to be the next CM of Karnataka.

In sporting terms, the Karnataka Assembly elections can be termed as the quarter-finals and the elections in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana later this year the semi-finals ahead of the all-important Lok Sabha battle next year. The outcome of the Congress victory in Karnataka in many ways is a pointer to how the battle for supremacy in the general elections will shape up. The victory is a big morale booster for the Congress, which, barring the success in Himachal Pradesh in December, had not won a single state election since the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The scale of the victory will help the Congress counter the narrative and perception that it loses out in direct fights with the BJP all the time. Given that four states will go to polls in the coming months, including Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh that it rules, the Karnataka victory gives the Congress the much-needed confidence to approach these polls aggressively and the political space to argue that it can still fire up the imagination of voters.
