Karnataka | Civil Procedure Code to be amended to reduce pendency

In a decision that could help address the large pendency of civil cases, the Karnataka government on Friday decided to bring in an amendment to the Civil Procedure Code that is expected to reduce the pendency. Currently, about 9.98 lakh cases are pending in Karnataka.

“A large number of cases have been pending before courts for several years. Some even for 50 years. The amendment will ensure that justice in civil cases will be delivered in a time-bound manner,” sources said after the Cabinet meeting. The amendment Bill would be moved in the Winter Session of the legislature, sources said.

Sources said it would be a landmark development as it would remove the travails of people fighting civil cases. “Summons sent to the phone registered in the name of the person or email will be valid. The finality of the case can be arrived at the time of the first hearing since everything now will be time bound.”

MUDA overhaul

Meanwhile, in another significant development, a new Bill to overhaul the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) was cleared by the Cabinet. “The Bill will ensure the functioning of MUDA on the lines of the Bangalore Development Authority. In future, all urban development authorities in the State will function on the lines of the BDA.”

While the gig workers welfare Bill was listed, the matter was deferred, sources said.

₹3,740 crore for NK

The State Cabinet also approved projects worth ₹3,740 crore for the North Karnataka region for irrigation, tourism, urban development, and rural development, among other sectors.

In the tourism sector, projects worth ₹500 crore were approved for the development of the Roerich estate in Bengaluru, Savadatti Yellamma, and Lakkundi, and for the comprehensive development of the Government Museum in Bengaluru. Of these, the Centre has already announced ₹100 crore each for the development of Saudatti Yellamma and Roerich estate, and the Centre’s assistance is also included in the total worth of projects cleared on Friday, sources said.
