Led by Marizanne Kapp’s half-century and Masabata Klaas’s 4-fer, South Africa clinched their first win of the T20I tri-series, with a comfortable 44-run margin against West Indies, at Buffalo Park in East London on Saturday (January 21).

Opting to bat, South Africa lost Anneke Bosch early. However, Kapp steadied the innings in the company of Laura Wolvaardt and Sune Luus, stitching 31- and 63-run stands respectively for the second and third wickets. The all-rounder slammed five boundaries enroute her 43-ball 52.

West Indies struck twice in the 18th over to dismiss both the set batters – Kapp and Luus – and ensured that the late flourish didn’t happen. Nonetheless, the hosts managed to put up a competitive 141 for 5, a total that proved too much for West Indies.

Hayley Matthews and Britney Cooper provided a slow but steady start to the chase, putting on a 32-run stand for the opening wicket before the latter fell in the penultimate ball of the powerplay. That dismissal paved the way for a collapse, from which West Indies could never recover.

Klaas, who bagged the first wicket, went on to also dismiss Matthews, Shabika Gajnabi and Afy Fletcher. Nonkululeko Mlaba and Ayabonga Khaka bagged a wicket each, and kept the run flow in check, conceding only 21 runs in their combined eight overs as West Indies were restricted to 97 for 8.

Brief Scores: South Africa 141 for 5 in 20 overs (Marizanne Kapp 52, Sune Luus 30; Shamilia Connell 2-17) beat West Indies 97 for 8 in 20 overs (Hayley Matthews 23; Masabata Klaas 4-21) by 44 runs.
