2024 in Kollywood was a rollercoaster ride as movies with low expectations ended up as huge blockbuster successes, while movies of big stars in Kollywood ended up as huge disasters.
As per reports, the biggest disaster of this year in Kollywood started with Dhanush’s Captain Miller. This movie was released as a Pongal special at the beginning of this year and ended up as a loss venture.

Even though the movie had a career-best opening for Dhanush, it flopped due to the over-expectations among the audience and only collected 75 crores worldwide.
Next came Rajinikanth’s Lal Salaam, directed by his daughter Aishwarya Rajinikanth. Before the release of the movie, it was said that Rajinikanth would appear only in a cameo role. However, Rajinikanth had more screen time than expected.

Despite this, the movie was flat and outdated. Due to poor responses from the audience, the movie collected only 18 crores worldwide and ended up as one of the biggest disasters.
Third on the list is Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2, directed by Shankar, which was the sequel to the cult classic Indian released in 1996. Indian 2 had huge expectations before its release, but it didn’t even satisfy 10% of the audience’s expectations.

The movie also became a troll fest. Made with a budget of around 300 crores, Indian 2 collected only 151 crores worldwide and ended up as the biggest disaster of this year in Kollywood, as well as the biggest disaster in Shankar and Kamal Haasan’s filmographies.
Lastly, we have the recently released Kanguva, starring Suriya and directed by Siruthai Siva. This movie was touted as the proper Pan-Indian movie of Kollywood before its release and was made with a budget of around 350 crores.
The producer, KE Gnanavel Raja, even mentioned in an interview before the release that the movie would collect 2000 crores worldwide.
However, after its release, the movie became troll material among the audience, with many trashing it on social media. Due to the disastrous response, the movie collected only 102 crores worldwide, marking it as one of the biggest disasters of this year in Kollywood.
