Kangana Ranaut is wearing different hats in her latest project Emergency, she is the producer, writer, director and lead actor! This biographical drama film is based on the life Indira Gandhi. It also includes a star cast of many well known actors such as Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman and Satish Kaushik. The life of Indira Gandhi has been very controversial as a political leader and it also draws in a religious minority of India that faced harsh consequences after her murder. Such topics demand sensitive portrayal.
But Kangana Ranaut seems to have taken a vendetta against the Sikh community with her repeated comments upon the community and now the misrepresentation in this film. The incident of her getting slapped by a Sikh female airport security official was in the news a few months back. It is her repeated attack on the community that has prompted a lot of backlash. Emergency portrays Sikhs in a very negative light. They are shown as terrorists who haunt the masses. None of this can be factually verified and the sentiments of the community are bound to be hurt. And Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has demanded a ban on Kangana Ranauta’s film.

While curbing of artistic expression has been common in bollywood, this seems to be a sensitive matter because the image of an entire community is being directly tarnished. We can only hope that a sensible resolution to the matter can be reached before the film’s release on 6 September. The review of the viewers and critics will finally prove pivotal in determining the outcome of this super controversial project.
