The Government of India introduced new laws, Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), on July 1, 2024.
In a landmark moment, the first punishment under these new laws has been handed down by a Bihar court.

Going more into the details, the Bihar court sentenced two individuals to life imprisonment for a murder case. What stands out is the swift justice delivered, with the guilty being convicted and sentenced within 48 days of the crime.
The gruesome mass murder took place on July 17 in the Saran district of Bihar, in Dhanadih village. Criminals attacked the family of Tarakeshwar Singh while they were asleep on their terrace, stabbing them indiscriminately. Tragically, Tarakeshwar and his two daughters lost their lives, while his wife sustained severe injuries.

A case was immediately registered under the Indian Penal Code, and a special investigation team was formed to track down the culprits. A chargesheet was filed against them just 14 days after the incident. On Tuesday, the court found them both guilty, and by Thursday, the Sessions Court had sentenced them to life imprisonment.
According to the public prosecutor, this marks the first instance of a conviction under the newly implemented criminal laws in India.
