Trump smiles as he admits Murphy was starting to build a head of steam. “By the time it got to 12-10, you’re probably starting to think the worst. It was the way he was potting the balls as well. To be honest there’s probably one or two players who, you’re sat and you have the lead and you don’t want to be looking at them, and Shaun is one of them. The table was so reactive that every time I put a little bit of side on, it was thrown, whereas Shaun hits the ball so central that he was in a world of his own for them four or five frames! So I was a little bit worried but I just had to back myself in that last frame to put a nice stroke on the first red and get in.”

Trump battles his way through a testing half-century break, relying on the rest on a couple of occasions, before missing a mid-range red to give Murphy a way back in. But Murphy misses a difficult red into the left middle by some distance and that is his last shot of the 2025 World Championship. Trump finishes off the job and he will progress to the quarter-finals.

They shake hands, Trump acknowledges the crowd and perhaps breathes an internal sigh of relief that he held off that stubborn fightback.

Finally, Trump slows the relentless flow of potting against him with a nerveless long red, which he holds courageously for the blue knowing a miss would have left Murphy in prime position.

Murphy rattles off another beautiful break, finishing agonisingly on 99 with an acute red which rattles in the jaws, but he won’t care much about the century – that’s four frames in a row and this is very much game on.
